The Scooter That Thinks It's an SUV- and Proves It

Most electric scooters in India ask you to pick a side: get a stylish urban commuter with minimal boot space, or a utility workhorse that looks like it was designed in 1999. River Mobility looked at that choice and refused to make it.
Founded in Bengaluru in 2021 by Aravind Mani and Vipin George, River Mobility built the Indie — a scooter with 43 litres of under-seat storage, front footpegs, pannier mounts, and enough road presence to be called the SUV of scooters without irony. In under two years of production, it rolled out its 20,000th unit, won two consecutive Red Dot Design Awards, and secured backing from Yamaha Motor Corporation. This is how that happened.
The Brand Story
From a Bengaluru Garage to India's Most Talked-About EV Startup
River Mobility was incorporated in March 2021- right in the middle of the pandemic- by two engineers who had spent years watching India’s two-wheeler market ignore a critical gap. Nearly half the country’s population uses a scooter daily. Many of them are running small businesses, making deliveries, managing side hustles alongside nine-to-five jobs. The scooters they had access to were either good-looking or useful. Never both.
2021
River Mobility founded by Aravind Mani (CEO) and Vipin George (CPO) in Bengaluru. R&D facility established with strong investor backing.
Feb 2023
River Indie officially launched in India. Its SUV-inspired design and large storage capacity made it stand out in the EV market.
2024
Won the Red Dot Design Concept Award. New investors joined and the Indie Gen 2 update introduced fresh colours and upgrades.
Nov 2025
Won the Red Dot Product Design Award. Yamaha-River collaboration expanded and the 20,000th Indie scooter was produced.
2026
Indie Gen 3 launched with smarter technology, improved ride quality, and extended warranty support across India.
What makes River’s trajectory unusual is the pace. Going from zero to 20,000 units in under two years, with a factory in Hoskote (Karnataka) designed entirely for scalability, is not typical of Indian EV startups. Most spend their early years raising money. River spent theirs building components in-house- battery packs, drivetrains, even the pannier mount system- which gave them cost and quality control that outsourced manufacturers simply don’t have.
The Product
River Indie- Everything You Need to Know Before Buying
The Indie is River Mobility’s only product- and that focus shows. Every design decision, every engineering choice, and every software update has gone into making one scooter exceptionally good rather than spreading effort across a range.

The storage numbers deserve a closer look. At 43 litres under the seat- 78% more than the segment average of 24 litres- the Indie can genuinely carry things that most scooter riders strap to their backs or balance on their footboards. Add the pannier mounts and the front compartment, and you have a two-wheeler that can actually serve as a light delivery vehicle, a grocery run machine, or a weekend trip companion without modification.
Indie is more than a scooter — it’s a multi-utility companion for the Indian rider. Winning both Concept Design 2024 and Product Design 2025 Red Dot awards validates our philosophy: great design addresses real needs of real people.
The Recognition
Two Red Dot Awards in Two Years- What That Actually Means
The Red Dot Design Award is one of the three most respected design prizes in the world, alongside the iF Design Award and the Good Design Award. Winning one is significant. Winning two- in consecutive categories- is something no Indian two-wheeler brand had done before River.
India’s Only Two-Wheeler Brand with Both Red Dot Wins
Concept Design 2024 + Product Design 2025 — in consecutive years. A global validation of rider-first engineering from a Bengaluru startup.
The jury specifically cited the Indie’s variable transport solutions, protective Safeguard features, and practical everyday functionality. In design terms, these are unusual criteria- most awards go to objects that look exceptional. The Indie won for being useful in an exceptional way. That’s a harder thing to build.
The Partnerships
When Yamaha Invests in Your Startup, You're Doing Something Right
In January 2024, Yamaha Motor Corporation invested in River Mobility- making it one of the few Indian EV startups to attract investment from a legacy global two-wheeler manufacturer. The partnership went further than just capital. In November 2025, Yamaha and River jointly launched the EC-06 electric scooter, based on River’s Indie platform- the first product to emerge from the collaboration. For a startup that’s barely four years old, having Yamaha and Mitsui as investors, and Lowercarbon Capital (Chris Sacca’s climate-focused fund) among its early backers, is a signal that the product has been validated by people who have seen a lot of electric vehicle companies come and go.
