One Woman. One Garage. One Question That Changed Indian EV History.

Ampere began its journey in 2008 when entrepreneur Hemalatha Annamalai entered India’s emerging electric vehicle market with a vision to make sustainable mobility accessible to everyday consumers.

One Woman. One Garage. One Question That Changed Indian EV History.

At a time when electric vehicles were still considered a niche concept, she chose to build for the future rather than follow existing trends. Her determination eventually attracted the attention of renowned investors, including Ratan Tata and Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan.

What started as a small venture in Tamil Nadu has grown into a recognized electric mobility brand, generating ₹786 crore in revenue and earning a place among India’s leading electric two-wheeler manufacturers.

This is not just an EV success story- it is a story of vision, resilience, and India’s growing leadership in sustainable transportation.

The Journey- 17 Years, Station by Station

2008- The Foundation Ampere Vehicles is set up in Coimbatore with a founding mission to bring eco-friendly mobility into people’s lives and make rides affordable. The first products are electric cycles and load carriers — not glamorous scooters for urban tech buyers, but practical vehicles for farmers, shopkeepers, and differently-abled individuals.

2015- The Validation Hemalatha Annamalai’s visionary pitch to Ratan Tata led to a significant personal investment in April 2015. Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan also invested, believing in her vision. A regional Tamil Nadu startup suddenly had national credibility and the attention of Indian industry.

2018- The Backbone Greaves Cotton augments its clean technology portfolio by acquiring Ampere Vehicles. This is the inflection point most people underestimate. Greaves Cotton is not a startup- founded in 1859 and listed on BSE and NSE, it is one of India’s oldest engineering conglomerates with a 165-year legacy spanning diesel engines, farm equipment, and now electric mobility. That institutional DNA-  particularly distribution reach and after-sales logistics- transfers directly to Ampere.

2022- The Factory Milestone The 50,000th Ampere two-wheeler rolls off the assembly line at the Ranipet EV Megasite in Tamil Nadu- a plant where over 70% of the workforce is women, a hiring philosophy embedded by Hemalatha from Ampere’s earliest days.

2024- The Premium Push Ampere launches the Nexus- its first mid-premium scooter- with a 7-inch TFT touchscreen, Nex.io connected ride system, 93 km/h top speed, 136 km certified range, and a 5-year battery warranty. It is Ampere’s clearest statement yet that the brand is not competing on price alone.

FY2026- The Proof Revenue reaches ₹786 crore- a 19% year-on-year improvement. Electric scooter sales grow 51%. Market share rises from 3.6% to 4.4%. National rank: #6. Growth is driven by strong demand, deeper regional penetration, product innovation, and better customer access.

The Decision That Quietly Defined the Brand- LFP Batteries

In 2021 and 2022, India’s EV scooter market had a fire problem- literally. Multiple brands saw their scooters catch fire on roads, in parking lots, in homes. Consumer confidence across the entire category took a hit.

Ampere had already made the right call before it became a crisis.

The decision: move the entire lineup to LFP- Lithium Iron Phosphate- batteries.

LFP is more expensive than NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt), the chemistry several competitors were still using because it costs less. But LFP does not burn the way NMC can. It handles India’s high ambient temperatures better. It has a longer useful cycle life. And in a country where scooters routinely park in narrow apartment corridors, next to cooking gas cylinders, in shared basements- that difference is not a spec-sheet footnote. It is the difference between safe and unsafe.

By 2026, every single Ampere model- from the ₹59,900 Reo 80 to the flagship Nexus ST- uses LFP chemistry across the entire lineup. All models except the entry-level Reo carry a 5-year or 75,000 km battery warranty. The Reo carries a 3-year or 30,000 km battery warranty.

The Full Lineup- Every Budget, One Battery Chemistry

  • Reo 80- ₹59,900 The Reo 80, with its 25 km/h top speed and 250W motor, is exempt from driving licence and vehicle registration requirements under current Indian transport rules. 80 km claimed range. For students, senior citizens, or anyone covering short daily distances, this is the most accessible electric scooter from any serious brand in India. Ampere EV
  • Mid Segment- Built for Indian Families
  • Magnus Grand- ₹89,999 Priced under ₹1 lakh, the Magnus Grand offers up to 95 km range, a durable dual-frame chassis, an advanced LFP battery backed by a 5-year/75,000 km warranty, 22-litre under-seat storage, and is available in Ocean Blue and Matcha Green. Running cost: approximately ₹0.19 per km.
  • Magnus Neo- ₹87,000–₹90,000 The Magnus Neo set an India Book of Records entry by completing a continuous journey from Bengaluru to Auto Expo 2025 in Delhi, covering over 2,300

Final Thoughts

Ampere Electric is not an overnight success. It is 17 years of patient manufacturing, honest engineering, and building in markets bigger brands ignored. It switched to LFP batteries before regulators made it mandatory, built a factory where the majority of workers are women, and grew its dealer network while competitors were cutting theirs.

Har Gully Electric was never just a tagline. It was always a plan.
